Grenada is the sort of place you can’t help but fall in love with. She’s an island with heart, soul, spice – and mangos! – where you can strike a balance between relaxation, cultural experiences, and adventure; sleep in comfort; and feel at ease on your family vacation.
Relax on the gorgeous white sand of Grand Anse Beach, experience the overflowing bins of fruits, vegetables, and spice at the St. George’s produce market, hike with your kids through Grenada’s lush rainforest, and snorkel its underwater sculpture garden and collection of shipwrecks. You’ll be counting the days until you return.
Most travelers will stay in Grand Anse with kids – just 10 minutes from the airport, and home to the island’s iconic 2-mile white sand beach. Up the island, though, there are some gems that are worth the journey if you want to spend a couple of days getting off the well-trodden path.
There are too many to count. Grenada is a personal Mango Tree favorite, and inspired our company name. Our first “scouting trip” to Grenada felt like coming home. Grenada is called the Spice Island because of its nutmeg crops, and if you’ve never had freshly grated nutmeg on a rum punch, you’re missing out. We’ve made a point to get to know the nooks and crannies of Grenada – including the northern part of the island that most people never see – and can’t wait to help you plan your Grenada family vacation.
Families who want a big hotel with multiple pools, entertainment, and restaurants on site; you’ll find boutique hotels for every traveler in Grenada, from quirky to 5-star luxury, but the best ones all have small footprints (which we think is a huge plus!).
Spices and produce, which earned Grenada the “Spice Island” nickname.
English is the official language of Grenada.
The currency of Grenada is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC). US dollars can be used when cash is needed, but you’ll be given change in EC. Credit Cards are widely accepted.
Grenada is a small island country, about twice the size of Washington DC at 133 square miles. You can circle the entire island in about 4 hours. As you explore, you’ll notice above all else the lush landscape – rainforests, waterfalls, and tons of vegetable and fruit trees. Relax, kick off your shoes, and get to know the people who call this warm hearted island home.
Driving in Grenada is not for the faint of heart. Cars drive on the left, and the roads are narrow and winding. If you’re comfortable with island driving, absolutely rent a car to explore! If not, make Grand Anse beach your homebase, and get around with a driver arranged through your hotel to keep up relaxed vacation vibes.
Grand Anse Beach, just 10 minutes from the airport, is the center of activity, and home to the island’s best hotels. From here, you can easily get out on the water and do excursions into the island interior. But for a unique Grenada experience, consider spending a couple of nights exploring the beaches, hiking trails, and rum distilleries on the northern tip of the island.
Peak Season: Mid-December through April (peak demand, high prices)
Shoulder Season: Early Nov/December; May and June (still great weather, better prices)
No Go: There isn’t one! Low risk of hurricanes and a good choice for off-season Caribbean travel.
Fly to Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) through Miami, New York, Boston, or Charlotte. It’s a small airport, making customs a breeze, and from there, you’re 10 minutes to most beach resorts.
It’s the perfect beach destination for families who want something a little different; a little more real. On a Grenada family vacation you won’t find hordes of tourists, but you will find beautiful hotels, enough activities to entertain the kids, and tons of character. Bonuses for families:
You could spend dozens of hours researching your trip. Or you could have a family travel expert curate your personalized itinerary. What’s stopping you?
