Why we like it for families

The location: Sometimes, the best part of a party is being able to leave it. Since the Perry Hotel isn’t on Key West proper, but on neighboring Stock Island, it puts all of the bustle of Key West right at your fingertips while also offering a quiet and cozy spot to relax once you and the kids have had enough. It also means that fishing, kayaking, diving, and other outdoor activities in the Keys are that much closer. The hotel runs a shuttle every half-hour to Old Town from 9 a.m, to 11 p.m. (grocery store and beach drop-offs are also available). Being just off-center from the action may also make this spot a more affordable option.
The casual vibe: Key West is a “come as you are” destination and the Perry Hotel reinforces that sentiment even amid its chic surroundings. Fire pits encourage socializing after dusk. Dogs are allowed and encouraged (subject to an additional nightly fee). The hotel’s three restaurants all feature views of the marina or sit right on the water. Your bed will be plush and your bath products will be top-end, but you will all be comfortable in flip-flops.
The pool: Key West is a tiny island. There is a ton to see and do, but great pools can be hard to come by. Fortunately, the Perry Hotel has not just one, but two well-appointed pools, heated year-round (very important for December-February travel!). The marina views will delight the kids as local fishers bring in fresh catch. Ground floor rooms provide direct access to these pools and an outdoor shower, making it even easier for parents to relax while kids splash around.
The rooms: The Perry offers spacious rooms with modern furnishings, rustic touches, and large balconies with water views. There are great options for families, including several room categories with a pull-out couch. Each room comes with the family-critical mini-fridge for storing snacks or other essentials.

Location and Activities

The Perry Hotel & Marina is on Stock Island, the last island you cross before arriving in Key West. From Miami, the drive down through the Keys will take you 3-5 hours, depending on traffic. Plan for lots of stops along the way, and the drive will be part of the fun. If that’s not appealing, Perry Hotel is less than 10 minutes from the Key West International Airport.

The hotel is adjacent to a marina that offers boat slips and a host of water activities. There are a handful of restaurants on Stock Island, but the real draw is being right next to (but not in the midst of) Key West’s lively energy. Pop in for dinner or a drink, and retreat with the kids to your calm, waterside retreat.

Key West is perhaps best recognized for its Victorian architecture, but the Perry Hotel has a distinctly sleek and minimalist feel. Clean, modern, and fresh, it has a lively and new energy about it.
Even so, the Perry Hotel doesn’t skimp on the amenities. The hotel’s 100 rooms surround its two heated pools which offer plenty of loungers and shady umbrellas. From virtually everywhere on the property, you will have views of the hotel’s marina and gardens (a few rooms look out over the mangroves nearby).
The Keys have some amazing history, outdoor activities, and dining options worth exploring. When you are ready to venture out, your resort fee includes shuttle service to and from Old Town in the heart of Key West, nearby Higgs beach, or to the grocery store to stock up on smacks or other supplies.
For those times when you want the convenience of eating at the hotel, the Perry offers great options. You can start your morning at the Great Lakes Roasting Company, the on-site coffee shop. Indoor and outdoor seating is available and island-inspired smoothies are also on offer. Just off the lobby and spilling out onto the pool deck is Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen for upscale New American. You can order fresh-caught seafood off the menu, or go fishing and the kitchen will cook up whatever you catch.
If you’re looking for something even more casual, there are also two dockside bars. Salty Oyster Dockside Bar and Grill has burgers, salads, seafood alongside cocktails and local beers. Sloppy Joe’s Dockside is the Stock Island satellite of a Key West institution, and often has live music to entertain guests and locals alike.
There are also plenty of spots for playing or relaxing away from the pool. The hotel has a large events lawn, hammocks tucked away around the property, and the firepits mentioned above. Kids will love watching fish swim around under the docks.

If you’ve brought along furrier family members, who are welcome, there are both small and large dog parks on-site. The pet fee is $75 per night.

We booked a last minute trip during winter break to escape the frigid northeast temperatures! So many hotels were sold out, but we luckily stumbled upon the Perry Hotel. We never visited the keys and heard it was not the best place to bring children… but let me assure you, that is NOT the case. . . . There are definitely plenty of bars and “sip and sail” trips, but we found just as many family friendly excursions. Parasailing, wave runner rental, aquarium, inflatable water park, etc. The lobby is beautiful. The decor is the perfect balance of beachy and modern. The rooms are modern and clean. Also decorated beautifully. The restaurants had amazing food . . . The people here are so unbelievably accommodating and friendly. Just always willing to go the extra mile for excellent customer service (something that is not so easy to find these days!). . . . We will definitely be back to the keys..and the Perry will be our hotel of choice!
