Why we like it for families

  • The Location. We adore the island of Bonaire, and think everyone should go there. Laid-back, a bit off-the-beaten-path, but also very accessible and easy to navigate with kids, Bonaire is a top Caribbean family destination.
  • The Vibe: Cool, but not too cool for families, Delfins delivers an upscale, but accessible beach club experience. Solar-powered contemporary cottages linked by wooden pathways enclose a serpentine pool. An-open air beachside restaurant sits on a sunset-facing hill surrounded by white sand and wicker couches. The daybeds and paper lanterns may say “Insta-ready,” but you’ll find tons of kids running around the grounds, jumping off the hotel’s pier, and dancing to the pool bar’s lounge beats. The well-maintained wading pool, friendly staff and kids’ menu confirm that all ages are welcome.
  • The Great Pool. The centerpiece of Delfins is the pool, which is a sort of playground for kids in its own way. It has shallow platforms, a separate kids’ area, a pool bar, and several nooks and crannies to keep kids’ entertained. Steps from the pool, eat dinner in sand-floor open-air restaurant without ever needing to burden your kids with shoes.
  • Spacious and Affordable Rooms. From one-bedroom suites to four-bedroom villas with private plunge pools, there are rooms at Delfins to accommodate families and groups of all sizes, and even two-bedrooms come in at under $500 per night some weeks. The spaces are each equipped with simple, modern furnishings and full kitchens, always a plus with kids. Each room has a private balcony or terrace for enjoying the morning or relaxing after the little ones head to bed. Note, however, that these are not the luxury accommodations travelers sometimes expect in the U.S. – king beds may be two firm twins pushed together and one-bedroom apartments only have air conditioning in the bedroom.
  • Snorkeling and Diving: Like most hotels on Bonaire, Delfins boasts world-class snorkeling and diving right off the beach on the “house reef.” The hotel also has its own dive center that can help you with any gear rentals or organizing underwater adventures, including boat dives. Don’t worry if you see fins in the water. Spinner dolphins are common on Bonaire’s southwest coast (hence the resort’s name), so you might encounter a few passing by.
  • The food: Delfins hosts the Brass Boer, a stunning beachside project from restaurateurs Jonnie and Thérèse Boer, whose restaurant in the Netherlands has held 3 Michelin stars since 2004. While the setting is informal, make your reservations as soon as you confirm your room. Tables book up weeks (or more) in advance. If you can’t find a spot at this culinary landmark, the hotel’s beach and pool bar offers a full menu from the same chefs and a good rum selection. The best part is, the dining area runs seamlessly onto the beach, so your kids can do the same.

Location and Activities

Delfins Beach Resort is just 6 minutes away from Bonaire International Airport. It’s in a prime location for exploring Bonaire, just a few minutes drive from Kralendijk.

We recommend renting a car in Bonaire to see the island’s beaches and the town. Driving is easy, and Delfins offers car rentals directly to its guests, making it all that much easier.

  • Delfins is on the southwest coast of Bonaire, minutes from the airport and just outside its sleepy but charming capital of Kralendijk.
  • Walk out from the glass-walled reception room and you will immediately find yourself at the hotel’s centerpiece main pool. It connects to the beachside restaurant – Club Tropicana – via a swim-up bar. No one was manning the swim up bar during our visit, but it was easy enough to wander over to the main bar.
  • As noted above, the rooms at Delfins are spacious but not luxurious. Based on traveler reviews and our own tour of the property, we highly recommend getting a sea view room, as they are located closer to the pool and restaurant and are generally nicer. The affordable villas would be great for groups, but note that they sit a bit far from the pool and beach area.
  • You will find three restaurants on-site. The world-famous Brass Boer was ranked as the #1 restaurant in the region by Caribbean Journal. It offers a stunning open-air setting but does not cater to kids and is meant to be enjoyed over multiple courses. Make a reservation well in advance and save it for a special night out.
  • Club Tropicana is right next door and offers an easy atmosphere to go with sophisticated waterside bites, including the Brass Boer’s burger. Plus it has a kids menu and some evenings features live music around a campfire.
  • Further back into the property is Senang, an Asian-inspired bistro where you will dine under a potpourri of colorful paper lanterns.
  • Near Senang, set aside from the lively pool area, is where you will find the more tranquil secondary pool, suitable for laps and adjoining a brand-new, fully outfitted fitness center.
  • When you’ve had enough of the pools, grab a mask from the hotel’s dive shop. Most hotels in Bonaire have a “house reef,” and Delfins is no exception. Beautiful reef fish congregate around the pier, and a quick swim will take you to a coral-packed drop-off.
  • Bring your water shoes for the beach. Trucked-in sand and palm trees make the pool and bar feel beachy, but you will have to navigate some rocks to get into the ocean. There are waves here, and smaller children may need assistance.
  • If you are coming to scuba dive, Delfins has an on-site dive shop that will outfit you with gear and set you up for all your underwater activities. This might include gear and truck rentals to get out to your shore dives, and tank refills via a drive-through filling station. The shop, Dive Friends Bonaire, has multiple locations scattered all over the island, so you are never far from advice or assistance if needed.

Traveler Reviews

This resort is beautiful! The view is incredible. It has wonderful oceanfront dining and the food was fantastic. The pool is incredible with a wonderful layout and two lounging beds directly over the water. There is also a nice kids pool for younger ones. But the best part of the resort was the excellent service we received from the staff. Met our every need and were helpful, professional and delightful. This is a wonderful resort.

What a great property! The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. It has soft white sand and blue green water with all different shades of blue. We are scuba divers and this is the best jump off point for all the best dives on the island plus they have a 5 star dive shop right on location. Best beach bar and service Marjin and Mees went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. Great customer service on their parts. 5 stars!
