Costa Rica With Kids

Costa Rica is pure magic – a place where “Pura Vida” isn’t just a saying, it’s a way of life. Most parents have dreams of heading to Costa Rica with kids to zipline through the jungle and spot sloths in the treetops – then to kick back with sandy toes and a fiery sunset on the beach.

For families, Costa Rica is the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure destination. This is not a small island that can be summarized – there are so many different ways to approach a Costa Rica family trip and so many things to see.  Got animal lovers? The rainforests are teeming with monkeys, toucans, and colorful frogs. Thrill-seekers? Think volcano hikes, white-water rafting, and canopy tours. Even younger kids can get in on the action with gentle beach waves, tide pools, and nature trails.

The logistics in Costa Rica can be daunting, with winding undeveloped roads and long travel times between destinations. But with help, your family trip to Costa Rica can come together beautifully and feel effortless, whichever pocket of the country you choose.

MT Memory of Costa Rica With Kids

I was sitting by a firepit in Monteverde wearing a jacket (in August!) and thinking to myself — I never expected this!  The cloud forest sits at a much higher elevation than many of Costa Rica hot spots, so is always temperate, even when other spots are classic hot and humid summer destinations.  The boutique hotel I was staying at oozed the Mango Tree ethos: warm, welcoming, and connected to the local vibes.  That was the moment when I wanted to buy a return ticket immediately to see what other pockets of Costa Rica I could uncover for families.

My personal wish list for your family trip to Costa Rica: Go a little further than the average tourist to Costa Rica (yes, even with the kids in tow!) to experience what this country has to offer outside the northwest corner where most travelers start. From the lesser-visited Caribbean coast to the Osa Peninsula in the south, you can have so many incredible adventures, and it’s my goal to embolden you to seize them.

Key Facts For

Your Costa Rica Family Vacation

Known For

Canopy zipline tours through the rainforest and surf towns on the Pacific Coast.

Language

Spanish is the official language, but most Costa Ricans working in tourism speak English, making it easy to get around.

Currency

The Costa Rican colĂłn is the official currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas.

Size and Vibes

Costa Rica is small but mighty, about the size of West Virginia. Despite its compact size, it offers incredible diversity—each region has its own personality, but all maintain those “Pura Vida,” or “Pure Life,” laid-back, grateful vibes.

Getting Around

Traveling around Costa Rica does take some planning – and the distance between jungle and beach spots may be the number one hurdle to planning a Costa Rica family trip that feels manageable. Make the journey part of the adventure, and with a little help from us the logistics can feel easy! Expect to have a few 3-4 hour transfer days or take hopper flights on the domestic airline Sansa to shave down travel time.

Where to Stay

There are too many great spots to count.  Most families start in Arenal or Monteverde for the rainforest adventures, and then head to the Pacific Coast from there – perhaps to catch the surfer vibes of Nosara. Manual Antonion in the south offers beach and jungle in one stop, and the Caribbean coast has undiscovered charm for those looking to avoid the traditional tourist paths. Go for small boutique hotels and eco lodges that connect you to Costa Rica.

When To Go

Peak Season: December to April is Costa Rica’s dry season, with sunny skies and perfect beach weather.

Shoulder Season: May to August bring fewer crowds and better deals, but you may see some rain in the afternoon.

No Go: None! We have a secret: Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast experiences a dry season when most islands are in the hurricane zone from Sept-Oct, meaning there’s a top destination in Costa Rica any time of year, it’s just a matter of choosing the best area.

How To Go

Flying into San JosĂ© (SJO) is the easiest way to start your Costa Rica family adventure. Liberia (LIR) is a great alternative if you’re focusing on Guanacaste and the Pacific Coast. From there, domestic flights on Sansa Airlines, rental cars, or private transfers connect you to your destinations.

Let’s be honest, Costa Rica sells itself. It’s a playground for adventurous families, full of wildlife you can’t see anywhere else.  But what really makes it stand out is the laid-back and outdoor-focused way of life.  Here’s what to prioritize on your Costa Rica family vacation:

  • Up-close animal encounters: Spot sloths, monkeys, and vibrant macaws in the wild or visit one of the country’s many wildlife sanctuaries.

  • Eco-friendly travel: Stay in lodges that prioritize sustainability and teach your kids the importance of protecting the planet.

“Heading to the airport. This trip was outstanding!! One of my favorites ever. Thanks for all of your help!  The guides were all excellent. We saw tons of animals. Nayara was phenomenal.  The room was beautiful, the grounds stunning, the staff super helpful (and followed through with exactly what they said they’d do every time), and the food was superb. We ate all three dinners there, which were excellent, as was breakfast. We loved the hot springs and the frog walk. No notes. 10/10 hotel.”
