Jamaica with Kids

Jamaica is one of the Caribbean’s largest and most culturally rich islands, offering diverse experiences for families. From bustling Montego Bay to the laid-back vibes of Negril, there’s something for everyone. Families can choose between luxury resorts, community-based stays, or hidden gems along the coasts—each offering a different taste of Jamaica’s beauty and warmth.

Montego Bay is ideal for easy, fly-and-flop vacations, with kids’ clubs and activities that keep little ones entertained while parents unwind. But it’s not all about all-inclusives—our top picks offer both luxury and a peek into Jamaican culture. Beyond Montego Bay, Negril’s famous seven-mile beach features soft sands and calm waters, perfect for younger kids, while Ocho Rios boasts iconic spots like GoldenEye, where the James Bond films were written. .

With direct flights from many U.S. cities, Jamaica is highly accessible. The island also offers a range of affordable resorts and villas, making it possible for families to enjoy a memorable getaway without breaking the bank. Whether you’re after relaxation or adventure, Jamaica’s hospitality and culture make it a top choice for a family vacation.

MT Memory of Jamaica With Kids

Jakes Hotel in the community of Treasure Beach, Jamaica was on my wishlist for quite some time. When the opportunity for a last minute trip came up, we went as a group of three moms + three five-year olds, and what a time we had.  Our most memorable moment was when Captain Joseph – a local fisherman who also does day tours on his boat – invited us to dinner at his new restaurant.  Our kids drank fresh coconut water as we listened to Reggae, and we were near tears as we realized we were sharing a classic travel moment with our kids: that moment that strangers become friends.

Jamaica is Best For:

  • Families of all ages! Jamaica offers so many experiences that you’ll find one for yours;
  • Travelers of all budgets – Jamaica also offers some of the most affordable Caribbean vacations, but also a handful of top luxury resorts;
  • Open-minded travelers; we encourage you to get off the beaten path and embrace Jamaican culture and hospitality, as this island country has a distinct vibe worth experiencing.

Jamaica is Not For:

  • Families who want boutique hotels that are also close to the airport; Montego Bay is for resort stays; for boutique hotels head 2 hours to Negril or Treasure Beach.
  • Those seeking a posh, walkable beach town

Key Facts For

Your Jamaica Family Vacation

Known For

Jamaica is famous for its vibrant culture, reggae music, and stunning beaches and resorts. The island is also known for its delicious jerk cuisine, lush Blue Mountains, and warm, welcoming hospitality.

Language

English is the official language, making it easy for families to communicate, navigate, and engage with locals across the island.

Currency

The Jamaican Dollar (JMD) is the official currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in hotels, resorts, and tourist areas.

Size and Vibes

Jamaica is one of the largest Caribbean islands, spanning about 4,240 square miles with a population of roughly 3 million. Different towns offer a variety of experiences, from resort towns like Montego Bay to more relaxed, natural escapes in Negril and Treasure Beach. It takes 2+ hours to drive between destinations, so most travelers to Jamaica stick to one part per trip.

Getting Around

Driving in Jamaica is not for the faint of heart. Booking a private driver is probably the most stress-free way to explore Jamaica with kids. Major highways make for easy travel between regions, but the winding mountain roads (and the potholes, oh the potholes) require more patience.

Where to Stay

For luxury all-inclusive resorts with kids clubs, stick to Montego Bay. Negril offers laid-back boutique hotels along the famous seven-mile beach and the nearby cliffs. For a quieter experience, try villas on the north coast or iconic properties like GoldenEye in Ocho Rios – or head even further west to Port Antonio. And for an incredibly unique, community-oriented stay, head to Treasure Beach on the south coast.

When To Go

Peak Season: Mid-December through April offers warm weather, dry conditions, and festive events, but high demand means higher prices.

Shoulder Season: May through early June offers lower rates, fewer crowds, and pleasant weather—an ideal time for a villa rental before hurricane season.

No Go: August through October is hurricane season, when some resorts close for renovations or lower capacity.

How To Go

Fly direct to Montego Bay (MBJ) or Kingston (KIN) from many U.S. cities. Jamaica’s central location in the Caribbean makes it easily accessible, with regular flights from major U.S. hubs.

Rave Reviews

Mango Tree planned the perfect Jamaican vacation for our extended family of eleven, which wasn’t an easy feat, given our group included folks at the top (80) and bottom (1) of the age spectrum. The trip vastly exceeded our expectations and even my nephew, who is very well-traveled, still considers it the best trip he’s ever taken. Thank you, Mango Tree!

Jessica, family of 4, Spring 2024

I just got home from a trip to Jamaica planned by Mango Tree Travel, and it was perfect. The hotel was beautiful, and every activity was perfect for my 6 year old daughter. She had an amazing time and – the really amazing part – I came home feeling refreshed, like I got a real vacation! Any mom knows that’s the real test of a trip with kids. Lee knows so much about the Caribbean, and it’s clear how much she cares about each family and finding the perfect spot just for them. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and I am already excited for my next Mango Tree trip!
