Barbados amazed me with how easy it was to step out of a resort and into the local community. From the moment I arrived, Bajan hospitality shone through—every smile felt genuine, and every encounter full of personality.
Driving along the Platinum Coast, I found myself tempted by a string of inviting restaurants at every turn. On the east coast, the rugged beauty of crashing waves and wild landscapes felt like stepping into another world. By the time I took a swim with sea turtles in crystal-clear waters, I could see how Barbados could easily become your favorite place.
One of my top moments was taking a rum punch-making class at our hotel bar. The bartender mixed drinks while sharing local tips and jokes, turning a simple class into an experience brimming with island spirit. Barbados is a place where every detail leaves you wanting more.

English is the official language, but you’ll also hear locals speaking Bajan, a charming English-based creole. Phrases like “Wa gine on?” (What’s going on?) are fun to learn and try out with the friendly locals.
The Barbadian dollar (BBD) is the official currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. ATMs are plentiful, and credit cards are commonly used in tourist areas.
Measuring 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, Barbados is easy to navigate – but it can take a full 60-90 minutes to go from one end of the island to the other. It’s home to about 287,000 residents, and the island’s vibe ranges from sophisticated luxury on the west coast to lively local life on the south coast.
Barbados is family-friendly and easy to explore by car or by guided excursion. Renting a car allows flexibility to visit the island’s highlights, but taxis are also readily available.
We love to encourage families to stay just outside the line of major resorts on the Platinum Coast. Just north, near Speightstown, you’ll find luxury accommodations with calm beaches but also local charm. To be closer to the airport, to the surfing, and for a more local dining experience, choose the south coast near St. Lawrence Gap.
Peak Season: December to April; expect sunny weather and lively events like the Holetown Festival in February. Book early as accommodations fill up fast.
Shoulder Season: May to June; enjoy warm weather and fewer crowds, plus the start of the island’s huge Crop Over Festival.
No Go: There isn’t one! Barbados is certainly not immune from hurricane’s, but generally sits outside the main hurricane zone and is a great island for an off-season trip.

There’s so much more to discover in the Bahamas than the infamo/us mega-resorts like Atlantis and Baha Mar. Sure, a day at the waterparks is fun, but pair a stop in Nassau with a trip to the quieter Out Islands for a more well-rounded Bahamian experience.
