Why we like it for families

  • THE LOCATION: Gallows Point sits just a 5 minute walk up the hill from Cruz Bay, the small town at the heart of St. John, USVI. The easy access to the ferries and a walkable town is a surprising rarity in the Caribbean islands. Not many villas for families in the US Virgin Islands can boast walkable access to town like Gallowss Point can. This is a hotel for independent travelers looking to explore St. John and the Virgin Islands – not families hoping to park themselves at a beach resort. But this family-friendly hotel couldn’t be in a better spot for easy access to the island’s best beaches and boat trips to other islands too.
  • THE CONDO-STYLE ROOMS: The big benefit of staying at Gallows Point with kids is the hybrid between a well-appointed vacation rental and a hotel. The one bedroom apartments with living rooms offer families separate sleeping spaces, and full kitchens give you flexibility to do some cooking. All of the rooms at Gallow’s Point come with balconies or patios that offer waterfront views of either the Caribbean Sea or Cruz Bay Harbor. But you’ll also have access to outdoor grills, laundry services, and rental cars to explore the island – all the perks of an independent stay.
  • THE SNORKELING. With its waterfront location, you can dive straight into the ocean next to the pool for world-class snorkeling right off the beach.
  • THE STAFF: The staff at Gallows Point is friendly and accommodating. From a shuttle that takes you from the ferry to the outstanding service at the restaurant and pool, you’ll feel cared for at Gallows Point with kids – something you can’t say about your average AirBNB or villa stay.

Please note that due to its rocky waterfront location, Gallows Point accepts children 6+ only.

Location and Activities

You’ll reach Saint John by flying to the Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas. From the airport, you will catch a 35-minute taxi ride to the Red Hook ferry terminal. Ferries depart from Red Hook every hour, and it’s a short 20-minute ride over to St. John. So you’ll have about 60-90 minutes of additional travel time after you touch down in St. Thomas to get to Gallow’s Point Resort.

Gallows Point Resort is conveniently located within walking distance of the St. John ferry, or a short drive up a hill if you’d prefer the resort pick you up.

If you’re an anxious traveler and a catching a ferry on arrival to the islands makes you nervous, consider an island-hop! Stay 2 nights on St. Thomas at Secret Harbor Beach Resort, a Mango Tree Travel preferred hotel, and then take the ferry over to St. John for the duration of your stay.

In short, you’ll have about 60-90 minutes of additional travel time after you touch down in St. Thomas to get to Gallow’s Point Resort.

The island of St. John is 80% protected national park and is home to some of the most pristine beaches and magnificent snorkeling – plus hiking and land adventures too – all at your fingertips with no passport required.

  • Close to the ferry and downtown, Gallow’s Point sits right on the edge of the bay, with views back to St. Thomas. The hotel has car rentals on site, a shop with light provisions and snorkel gear to rent. as well as a great restaurant with a view to match. You’ll find a quiet vibe here and peacocks casually strutting around the property.
  • The services at the hotel are why we recommend Gallows Point for families who might want a little more than an AirBNB. Gallows Point offers 24/7 Front Desk services, full-time maintenance and housekeeping staff, complimentary arrival & departure shuttles from the ferry in town (if you don’t want to lug your suitcases up the hill!), and food and wine provisioning services so you’ll be freshly stocked on arrival.
  • As mentioned above, this is not a resort for simply staying put – it’s a home base for exploring the beaches and underwater world of St. John. But when you do want a break at the hotel, you’ll find a small but well-maintained pool and hot tub overlooking the ocean where you can relax and take in the stunning views.
  • There is easy access to the water at Gallows Point, but the beach is rocky – for lounging, you’ll be better at other beaches a short drive away. But Gallows Point’s beach is a great spot for snorkeling enthusiasts to launch from, and for confident ocean swimmers. A platform to swim out a ways from the beach is available for exploring the reef. This is a really convenient and lovely option for a low-key day at the hotel.
  • There are a ton of great hikes just outside your door if you’re staying at Gallows Point with kids with energy, for all skill levels. The concierge team can give you suggestions. Hop in a rental car and head into the Virgin Islands National Park. Just don’t forget the bug spray!
  • The beaches in St. John are unforgettable – and the island’s main draw. We love Honeymoon Beach with kids for the incredible, calm blue water you’re dreaming about. For snorkeling, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay Beach are the most popular with locals and tourists alike. The snorkeling is just a few feet off the shore and a great spot to set up shop for the day and explore – but be mindful of the cruise ship schedule and be sure to hit these popular beaches either before or after the cruise ship window. For more marine life, check out Watermelon Key for rays and tropical fish along with turtles.
  • The 1-bedroom suites are clean and large and have Sarasota-style décor, with floral and rattan furniture and tile floors. Don’t expect crisp white bedding or modern luxury furnishings.
  • All suites have a King bed in the bedroom, a pull-out Queen-sized sleeper sofa in the living room, and a single rollaway bed option for the fourth or fifth guest (must be requested in advance). As a reminder, there are no cribs, as only children over 5 years old are welcome. For families visiting Gallows Point, we recommend Ocean View rooms close to the pool and snorkel access.
  • All buildings are two stories and have either an ocean view or a harbor view. The only difference between the rooms is your location on the lower level or the upper level, and the view.
  • Ocean 362 is the onsite restaurant – and even visitors to Saint John that aren’t staying at Gallow’s Point come to visit for its stunning bar with sunset views. Don’t miss the sunset views from this rooftop location. The restaurant is open 6 nights a week and closed on Tuesdays. It does not have breakfast, so you’ll be cooking your own or strolling into town. Ocean 362 specializes in “island to table” food with traditional Caribbean food with a twist.
  • For those wanting to keep up a fitness routine on vacation, there is a small gym on property.

Traveler Reviews

We are first timers who had a great stay at Gallows Point! We stayed in an oceanfront room (7A), which worked out great. As the most recent previous reviewer noted, there are multiple reasons why this is such a great property. The location is incredibly convenient for all things Cruz Bay – literally a two-minute walk to Beach Bar, etc. The property could not be landscaped any more beautifully – we sat on the patio looking at the beautiful plants while a hummingbird came by each morning and a peacock occasionally came walking past. The services are great – the ability to rent a car on property and the well stocked gift store were very convenient. The pool and surrounding decking are very nice. The snorkeling right off the property was excellent – lots of coral, fish and on my last day was surprised by a large, sleeping nurse shark. So great to hit a beach in the morning, get lunch and then hit the pool/snorkel at Gallows in late afternoon. Finally, the room was nice and comfortable that met all our needs. We will absolutely return!!!

just returned from 6 nights at Gallow’s Point with my family (2 adults 2 kids: 13 and 10) and if only I could get right back on a plane and go back… it was just the most heavenly getaway. We stayed in a “Ocean View Upper” Suite with a stunning view of the water and St. Thomas from the balcony. The room was in lovely shape with modern appliances and finishes. The property is beautiful. The view from the pool deck is unbelievable. The pool is small but very well maintained as is the adjacent hot tub. We were there on President’s Day week, but unlike big chain resorts, it was quiet and peaceful everywhere.
