Why we like it for families

  • THE VIBE.Casa Claver was a colonial style house, restored into a boutique hotel with loft-style rooms. It exudes charming simplicity from the modern rooms to the hanging greenery in the common spaces. It feels more like a guesthouse than a hotel, in a good way.
  • THE LOCATION. We love Cartagena’s walled city for a family trip. While many families choose to stay outside the walled city in the Bocagrande neighborhood for easy beach access, it makes it hard to explore the historic town with kids. Casa Claver gives you the chance to explore the town in short, kid-sized adventures – including for dinner in the evenings, when bedtime is just a few blocks away.
  • THE SPACIOUS ROOMS. Most of Casa Claver’s 7 rooms are spacious enough to accommodate kids, and the Deluxe Loft offers two separate rooms for up to 4 people. Several of the loft spaces include adjoining rooms to fit larger families. Some of them offer a mini-bar, kitchenette, and private balconies to relax after the kids are asleep.
  • THE POOLS. Cartagena is hot and it’s critical to have a pool as a retreat from the afternoon heat. Casa Claver has two! The rooftop pool offers city views, and the indoor courtyard pool a shady green retreat to switch things up.
  • THE PRICE. Casa Claver is more affordable than some of the other hotels on our roster, making it good choice for a more budget conscious family who still wants to experience one of Cartagena’s mansions-turned-boutique-hotels. By way of example, a standard loft (king bed + sofa bed in living room) that can fit a family of 4 starts at $300 – $400 USD depending on the season.

Location and Activities

Casa Claver is 15 minutes away from the Rafael Nuñez International Airport – CTG, Colombia.

  • Getting to Casa Claver from the Rafael Nuñez International Airport takes 14 minutes by car. It is located within the walled city of Cartagena.
  • Walking through the hotel is like entering a plant sanctuary, as the lobby boasts delightful internal gardens. The reception staff are friendly and accommodating, always happy to recommend the nearest or the best restaurants and sights.
  • Casa Claver has 8 rooms with a simple and modern design. Some have internal terraces with views of the gorgeous lobby and indoor pool, others have outdoor balconies facing old town. All are beautiful.
  • Inside the hotel are 2 swimming pools that the guests can enjoy 24/7. The indoor pool is a calm oasis on the first floor, with a shallow shelf that’s great for toddlers. But a highlight of the hotel is the pool on the rooftop, where you can bask in the daylight (or moonlight!) while admiring the incredible view of the old town, surrounded by colorful bougainvillea flowers trailing through the rails of the rooftop. Sun loungers are also sitting beside the pool.
  • There are no restaurants or bars within the hotel but guests are offered a free breakfast. Choose from 5 breakfast options the night before and have it delivered to your rooms the next morning. Or, if your kids need to get up and moving, you can have your breakfast in the dining areas of the hotel. Barbecue facilities are available at the hotel for cooking, and many lofts have kitchenette too. Plus, Cartagena’s best restaurants are right at your fingertips beyond the hotel walls.

Traveler Reviews

Several members of our family traveled to Cartagena for a wedding, and we all enjoyed our stays at Casa Claver. The hotel was spotless, and we felt very comfortable with the Covid precautions in place. Great location in the Old City, and best of all the staff, especially James, couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. We stayed 9 nights and the spacious rooms and daily breakfasts–not to mention our full private laundry room–were a treat. Also enjoyed the rooftop pool with the beautiful views. We speak only a few words/phrases of Spanish, but that wasn’t a problem. Thank you, Casa Claver! We’ll be back.

We had a wonderful stay with our hosts at Casa Claver. The staff bend over backwards. James, Benjamin, Camille, Luz, and the entire staff made our stay fantastic. The apartment was perfect and gave us plenty of space. The location can’t be beat and is close to everything in the historic area. Breakfasts were yummy and right on time. The staff even helped us by planning tours, covid testing, hair styling and clothes steaming. We’ll be back.
