Why we like it for families

  • THE LOCATION. Bastion provides a great choice for families wanting an upscale, cosmopolitan vibe. But it still captures the beauty of Cartagena’s walled city. You’ll be steps away from the action, and kids will love the colorful buildings, horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, and overall energy right outside the hotel doors.
  • THE POOL. When visiting Cartagena with kids, a pool is a must-have. Bastion’s fantastic rooftop pool is among the best retreats the walled-city has to offer. You’ll get gorgeous views, comfortable lounge furniture, access to drinks at the terrace bar, and plenty of shallow platforms for little swimmers.
  • THE FOOD. Try the amazing breakfast buffet at Bastion and you’ll understand why travelers rave about the hotel’s food. Your children will be delighted to choose from the platters of freshly baked bread and pastries, local fruits, deli meats, and more. The hotel restaurant, El Gobernador consistently ranks among Cartegena’s best restaurants.
  • THE PEOPLE. The staff at Bastion Luxury Hotel will greet you and your children warmly. There’s always someone around to help if you need something. You’ll know from the minute you walk through the doors that your whole family is welcome here.

Location and Activities

Bastion Luxury Hotel is located in Cartagena’s old-walled city, just 15 minutes from Rafael Nunez International Airport. The city’s best sites will be at your fingertips, so no car needed while in town.

  • Cartagena is studded with rambling mansions-turned-hotels. With 51 rooms, Bastion Luxury Hotel is one of the larger and sleeker hotels in the walled city. The hotel has three floors, plus a rooftop pool and terrace with great city views.
  • Bastion’s heart is its internal courtyard, where you can sink into the plush, brown leather sofas for a welcome drink. All the hotel rooms face the courtyard, which is also where you’ll gather for breakfast.
  • As soon as you enter, El Gobernador restaurant will be on your left. At night, the restaurant can get lively with music and guests from around the city. But you’ll also get to experience the restaurant at its most tranquil when breakfast and lunch are served in the courtyard. Kids are welcome at all hours.
  • The rooms aren’t huge, but are very comfortable – and the historic location is fantastic. You probably wouldn’t stay at Bastion for a whole week with your kids unless you get adjoining rooms, lest you’d start to feel a little cramped. But for a few days in the city, it’s a great choice.
  • If you want a day at the beach while in town, Bastion has a partnership with Makani Luxury Beach Club on Isla Terra Bomba, 15 minutes off the Cartagena coast.

Traveler Reviews

Amazing place, very modern inside, and well located. Needless to say, the best rooftop pool I have been in a while with an amazing sunset. We were at the Bastion with our two kids from 12-23-20 to 12-28-20. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Every single staff member made us really feel special and we were well taken care of. Jorge and Andrea at the rooftop bar were absolutely the BEST, they made our experience at the Bastion extra special! We will certainly come back to the Bastion whenever we get back to Cartagena.

We stayed at Bastion as a group of 9 people (2 families traveling together) and can not say enough about this hotel. It is a beautiful property in a very central location with a fantastic rooftop pool area and an outstanding breakfast BUT what stood out more than anything was the amazing service we received from everyone at this hotel. Everyone went above and beyond to help us with anything that we needed—from making a dinner reservation to celebrate a birthday to arranging transportation to a town 4 hours outside of the city to graciously responding to all of our daily needs, we absolutely loved the staff! The service at this hotel far surpasses that of any other hotel we have visited. Thank you Bastion!
