Why we like it for families

  • THE RELAXED VIBE. This is one of those peaceful hotels you want to visit even without kids, but that welcomes your kids too. You’ll immediately relax – and feel confident you’ve discovered a Roatan hidden gem – when you walk through the well-crafted lobby (which was carefully designed by hotel’s lovely owner, Patsy).
  • THE ROOMS. The two-bedroom suites at this property are enormous. It’s hard to find a hotel with a luxury feel that also has spacious rooms for families at a decent price, but XBalanque Resort strikes that balance.
  • THE LOCATION. You’ll be mid-way between Roatan’s best beach (West Bay) and liveliest town (West End) – the island’s two most touristy areas. Both are accessible by a 5-minute boat taxi from the hotel’s private dock, but you can retreat to a quiet home base at the end of the day. In our opinion, this is the best possible location in Roatan.
  • THE PEOPLE. The hotel’s small size allows you to connect with the staff and get to know them, which makes you want to return. The owners, Patsy and Dennis, are originally form North Carolina and have created XBalanque as a true home-away-from home. First-time guests quickly become repeat customers.

Location and Activities

XBalanque Resort is 25 minutes from Roatan’s Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport. Although the hotel will arrange transportation, we highly recommend renting a car in Roatan for easy exploration.

  • Roatan’s main road runs along the spine of the island, with off-shoots down to the beach. One such off-shoot ends at the gorgeous Xbalanque hotel.
  • The hotel’s main building houses the art-filled lobby and six one- and two-bedroom suites (two on each floor). Apart from the main building, there is a two-bedroom beachfront villa, a four-bedroom hillside villa, and five loft rooms (the Elemental Lofts) also set back in the hillside. Golf carts are provided for guests staying on the hill.
  • Pass-through the lobby and you’re immediately in open-air Lotus restaurant, offering a five-star dining experience featuring local foods and fresh seafood. The staff is more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions. The chef specializes in desserts so come with your sweet tooth.
  • Next to Lotus is the hotel’s small but gorgeously landscaped pool, which in turn leads directly to the private beach and dock. Each outdoor area is appointed with tasteful, plush lounge furniture.
  • For parents, Lotus Spa offers massages, aromatherapy, facials, exfoliations and body scrubs, nail treatments, and yoga classes.
  • The hotel has a fitness center, and arranges tee times at a local golf course.

Traveler Reviews

We stayed at Xbalanque in December over the Christmas Holidays. . . .We had dinner at Lotus on Christmas Eve, and it was excellent, with choices for the kids also. We had rooms on the top floor – 2 bedrooms with a fully equipped kitchen and living room. Each bedroom had a king bed, with a roll-away provided for a child. We loved sitting on the balcony to enjoy the sunsets. The airport pickup and drop-off was included, and they will stop at the grocery store if you ask, which is the best way to stock your kitchen.

We visited during the middle of March and the kids and found it to be spectacular. Specifically the kids like the following: 1. Amazing staff – they were very attentive. 2. Incredible beach and access to the reef. 3. Food was always great and we didn’t want to eat anywhere else. 4. Views are book worthy. Thank you to Patsy and the team for making it feel as though we were in our own home. We will come back! You have now set the bar high for future special trips.
