Why we like it for families

  • The beach. If you come to Negril with young kids, you want to be on the beach. Negril’s Seven Mile Beach is about as kid-friendly as they come, and known as Jamaica’s best beach, with a long stretch of sand and calm clear waters. At Skylark, you’ll be steps from the water.
  • The Food. Miss Lilly’s, the open-air beachfront restaurant at Skylark, got its start in New York City before returning to its Jamaican roots. You’ll find classic island cooking, including fish and meat straight off the grill, in a vibrant and brightly colored atmosphere, fun for parents and kids alike. The on-display jerk smokehouse and BBQ grilling station is the restaurant’s centerpiece. A classic kids’ menu is available if your little one isn’t feeling adventurous.
  • The People. Skylark is a gem of a hotel, and it’s the staff that really makes it shine. Traveler reviews (confirmed by our own personal experience) highlight the personable and warm staff as the reason to stay here on all future trips to Jamaica.
  • The Simplicity. Skylark is a simple, small beach hotel with tons of charm. Think colorful rooms, a hip vibe, Jamaican flavors, and easy access to the bars, restaurants, and activities on Negril’s epically chill beach.

You won’t find oversized suites here, or a pool. This hotel is best for families who don’t mind sharing space with the little ones for a few days, or who have kids old enough to stay in an adjoining room. Above all, it’s best for families who love a great beach, good food, and an authentic experience, and who just want to spend a few easy days playing in the sand and sea.

Location and Activities

Skylark Negril Beach Resort is located on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, about 75 minutes away from Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport. Jamaica, without a doubt, makes our list of best Caribbean islands with kids, and the beach in Negril is a big reason for that.

Skylark offers great tips for starting your journey on the right foot, including recommending a tour company for the transfer, and a bakery stop along the way. (Plus a medical marijuana stop… perhaps for a different trip without the kids.)

  • In Jamaican slang, to “skylark” means to laze about and lollygag, which is exactly what Skylark wants for its guests. The staff want you to relax into vacation mode the minute you set eyes on the immaculate Seven-Mile beach.
  • The main hotel lobby is in a simple white building facing the beach, surrounded by lush green palm trees, with a great courtyard for running around. The reception area’s retro bohemian vibe, with white, wood, and old-school photo frames, sets the stage for fun. The white, blue, and pink color palette of the resort has a calming effect too.
  • Skylark Negril has only 28 rooms, all with pops of color, mid-century modern furnishings, and light-wood walls. Retro music posters and record covers hang in the room add to the classic feel. Each room has Wi-Fi, desks, hairdryers, well-stocked minibars, and a safe, and most have a patio or balcony. Because the rooms are on the small side (no suites) we highly recommend booking a ground floor room with kids, with easy access to the beach and gardens where you’ll spend most of your time.
  • Adjoining rooms are available and the best choices for families of 4+
  • Miss Lilly’s has great Jamaican food, but you’ll also be just a short walk down the beach to the many other restaurants Negril has to offer.
  • There isn’t a pool at Skylark – it’s beach or bust. The sun loungers on the beach are fantastic, though, with shade canopies on each, and the beach truly is a delight for kids.
  • Beyond the beach, you’ll find a small gift shop that sells sundries such as sunscreen and locally crafted goods like jewelry and artwork. There is also a spa with a single and a double treatment room, and beach massages are offered. Morning yoga with an ocean view can also be arranged.

Traveler Reviews

Excellent laid back family holidayThe skylark is an exceptional small boutique hotel. We stayed for 3 nights with our two small children and were blown away. The room was clean, simple and modern. The beach is beyond beautiful and we loved how you could use the paddle boards for free and there was sand toys about as well. The star is definitely the food though. Mrs. Lily’s was mind blowing. We also took the shuttle down to the cliffs of Rockhouse to have a meal there and it was equally good. Would have liked to explore that more but children must be 12 and older so we weren’t allowed. I felt ever so slightly apprehensive booking Skylark as most reviews were from couples and younger parties. But if your young family’s vibe is gorgeous crystal clear beaches, excellent food and a laidback setting this is the place for you!

one of the best hotels in negril, Jamaicathis was an awesome experience. the staff was very pleasant and courteous. they went above and beyond! the pictures do not give justice to this place. there are no televisions in the room, however it was not a problem as this gave us time to reconnect and shut out the world for a while. the bed is soooo comfortable, i did not want to get out but I am glad i did as they have one of the best restaurants on the 7 mile beach of Negril. Lily’s food was great, we were celebrating a birthday and they made it even more special. taliana (I hope i got her name correctly) she is the Front Office Manager, she is truly a gem, she and her entire team knows what customer service means. i hope to go back there soon. but @skylarknegrilbeachresort is a MUST!!!
