Why we like it for families

  • The beach. The beach here truly is a St. Thomas hidden gem for families. Its small size, clear and shallow waters, and calm waves make it perfect for kids of all ages. It’s in a sheltered bay, and remains calm even when windy conditions make other beaches unswimmable. Because the hotel attract families, kids will have no trouble finding a playmate on the beach. (Bonus: There’s a dive shop on site, a store with beach gear and toys, and great snorkeling for parents).
  • The rooms. Condo-style suites of varying sizes (1, 2, and 3 bedrooms) with full kitchens, living rooms, and balconies. The rooms are not luxurious, but they are very comfortable, clean, and literally steps from the beach. You’ll have the flexibility to cook, but you don’t have to; the beachfront restaurant serves some of the island’s best fish tacos.
  • The location. You’ll be in an ideal location for exploring St. Thomas and nearby St. John. Many of St. Thomas’s best kid-friendly attractions are less than 30 minutes away, including Magens Bay (25 minutes); Coki Beach and the Coral World Ocean Park (15 minutes); and the Mangrove Lagoon (10 minutes). Secret Harbour is only 10 minutes from Red Hook’s restaurants and shopping – and the ferries to St. John or Tortola.

Location and Activities

Secret Harbour Resort is about 30 minutes from St. Thomas’s Cyril E. King Airport. It’s an easy taxi ride to the hotel, although we highly recommend renting a car in St. Thomas. Taxi fees are calculated per person, which quickly adds up when traveling as a family.

  • Secret Harbour’s condos are located in seven 3-story buildings – 4 beachfront and 3 hillside. The beachfront condos are the best for families.  First-floor rooms walk out right onto the beach.  See the resort map here to get oriented.
  • You won’t find the frills of a large resort at Secret Harbor – there are no organized activities or sprawling grounds.  Enjoy the comfortable rooms, the picturesque beach, and the good food and vibes at the beachfront restaurant.  But come ready to explore beyond the hotel’s walls.
  • The hotel essentially has one beachfront restaurant divided into three parts: The casual, beachfront Patio restaurant (8am – 10pm), the more refined Sunset Grille (5:30pm – 10pm), and the Beach Bar (8am-10pm (11pm weekends)). The Patio offers Food-To-Go, delivered to your condo. Don’t miss the fish tacos.
  • The hotel pool is on the hillside, far from the beach. You can walk or take a golf cart. The pool is totally fine – and has a great view – but it feels more like a condo pool than a luxury resort pool. The beach is where the action is at Secret Harbour.
  • The hotel staff are open to babysitting, so call to discuss childcare availability.

Traveler Reviews

“Excellent for an easy long weekend on the beach with small children. Spacious 2 BR/ 2 BA apartment, full kitchen, dining area and living room. Patio with outdoor dining table as well, opened directly onto the beach with plenty of shade and chairs. Snorkeling right in the cove! Calm water was good for the kids. There is also a pool deck and hot tub, beach bar and casual restaurant that wasn’t bad at all. Very relaxed and easy going boutique hotel.”

“My daughter and I wanted a quiet beachfront vacation where we could snorkel, swim, read, and unwind from life for a few days. We got exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful and calm beach for swimming and snorkeling, wonderful onsite restaurants, friendly and helpful staff, and comfortable accommodations. This resort is not for people who need constant action or organized/loud fun; it’s not a “see and be seen” place. This is for those who want to enjoy the simple beauty of a gorgeous beach. It’s ideal for families, multiple generation groups, couples, and anyone looking for a lovely getaway.”
