Why we like it for families

  • THE BEACH: The peaceful and always-calm beach at Carlisle Bay is exactly what many families imagine in a family beach resort in the Caribbean. The sugar white sand and absence of waves makes it a truly calming spot with kids. On Friday, Carlisle Bay kindles the fires on the beach for an adult-only celebration. Take advantage of the childcare, and enjoy old-fashioned rum punch and local Caribbean music at the Jetty Grill on Firepit Fridays from 7-9pm.
  • THE ROOMS: The suites for families at Carlisle Bay are really a stand out among luxury hotels. All suites face the ocean, and families have their own zone here, which we love. The family suites are steps from the sand – a surprisingly uncommon feature. They even have daybeds on the balconies and terraces so you can relax in the sun with comfort while your kids cool off or sleep inside. If you’re traveling with grandparents and a nanny and need a bit more room, the Carlisle Suites are a whopping 2650 square feet and have three bedrooms for your whole crew.
  • THE VIBE. Carlisle Bay is a classic Caribbean luxury resort. It has a slightly sophisticated and colonial air about it, with daily afternoon tea for guests and a crisp attention to detail. Proper but not stuffy, Carlisle Bay welcomes kids with open arms – and endless activities.
  • THE KID’S CLUB: Carlisle Bay’s kids’ club offers so much more than a fleet of babysitters and some toys in a room. Aptly named the Cool Kids Club, you’ll find activities for kids that many grown-ups would enjoy. The kids programming at Carlisle Bay is tailored to each age group and includes things like butterfly and beach scavenger hunts. Your kids will stay engaged and learning while actively exploring the property. And the kids’ club accepts kids as young as 2 – another rare find at Caribbean family resorts.

Location and Activities

You’ll fly into V.C. Bird International Airport on the north side of the island of Antigua. From there, you can take a taxi or rent a car and take it southwest to the opposite end of the island-about a 30-minute drive by car to get to Carlisle Bay.

It’s often said that everything in Antigua is a 30-minute drive from everything else, because of all the secret coves and bays. That’s certainly true of Carlisle Bay. It’s away from it all, but still near the highlights of the island. The town of English Harbour, a yachting and sailing refuge, is a half-hour drive away by car. The hotel is also located near Nelson’s Dockyard a UNESCO World Heritage Site with preserved 18th-century British buildings.

Carlisle Bay is an ultimate luxury resort for families in Antigua with everything you need to keep you busy and satisfied on property, so a car may not be necessary unless you have your heart set on exploring several other parts of the island. If you just want to get out once or twice, such as to English Harbour or Nelson’s Dockyard, ample taxis are available at Carlisle Bay or arranged through the concierge to take you wherever you’d like to go without the hassle of renting a car.

Tour operators will also provide transportation if you’d prefer organized excursions, including ziplining or snorkeling, and Carlisle Bay’s concierge team can help you arrange them.

  • You’ll enter the property through an open-air lobby, with a refreshing welcome beverage in your hand immediately to cool you down from your journey. You’ll immediately relax.
  • Carlisle Bay sits on a horseshoe-shaped piece of land, with the beautiful beach as centerpiece, and the lush green landscape of Antigua in the background. The greenery is a contributor to the relaxing vibe at this luxury family resort.
  • You’ll love Carlisle Bay with kids if you value truly getting away from the hustle and bustle, being doted on, and appreciate a full-service luxury hotel you never have to leave. The hotel can take care of everything you need.
  • The suites for families at Carlisle Bay have private balconies and terraces, multiple bedrooms, and are separated from the adult-only section of the resort, so no one has to be worried about disrupting a romantic vacation nearby. All family suites at Carlisle Bay open up to amazing ocean views and a tranquil beach just steps away. The rooms are outfitted in a contemporary and elegant style, with shades of blue and cream with pops of tropical color.
  • Complimentary non-motorized water sports include sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing, and paddle boarding. Private charters are available through the concierge on the resort’s luxury motor yacht. Take a sunset cruise with your loved one or a private half-day charter with a beach picnic.
  • The Cool Kids Club is open daily from 9 AM – 12 PM and 1 PM – 4 PM and offers programming for children from 2-12 years of age. It’s worth noting that this is NOT your average kids’ club. Activities are sorted by age group and include things like teddy bear picnics (ages 2-3), garden hikes and Hobie Cat sailing (ages 4-7), and mocktail class making and water polo (ages 8-12).
  • Another fun feature of this Antigua family resort is the on-site movie theater! Kid and adult movies are screened daily. Your kids can kick back and relax with some popcorn in the 45-person state-of-the-art theater, which features DVD projection, 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound, and an adjustable screen (from widescreen to cinemascope).
  • Babysitting is also available and can be arranged through the concierge.
  • Carlisle Bay has three bars and four restaurants. Dinner reservations are required at all restaurants. Two restaurants have dedicated kids’ menus and will be the most frequent dining choices for families at Carlisle Bay. Indigo on the Beach, an open-air pavilion, is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is right on the beach. Ottimo! is a casual Italian restaurant at the poolside. It’s great for kids, open for lunch and dinner, and, most importantly, has gelato!
  • For fine-dining, EAST offers Pan-Asian dishes and is available for. Note that this is a more upscale and formal restaurant, best for special occasions, but kids are certainly invited. Jetty Grill, at the far end of the property, away from the family zone, is an adult-only restaurant with seafood and Caribbean cuisine at the water’s edge with amazing views of the bay. It is available for dinner only. Drop the kids with a babysitter arranged through the concierge and head over for an adults-only bite.
  • The resort has 5 private tennis courts, 2 of which are floodlit for evenings. Professional instruction is available at all levels, and complimentary tennis clinics are available. If you’re looking for a resort in Antigua with pickleball courts – the newest travel trend – then you’ve also found a winner.
  • To take your vacation fitness to a new level, head to the fitness center with Technogym equipment and a team of personal trainers available upon request. Or enjoy the separate Yoga Pavilion, located in the tranquility of the tropical gardens.
  • With babysitting in place, also be sure to head to the CARA Organic Beauty Spa for the signature Carlisle Bay treatments with luxurious ESPA products. Indulge in an array of holistic treatments, detoxify at the sauna, or just go for a good-old fashioned couples massage to up the romance on your family vacation, even if just for a brief moment in time.
  • The resort also has a convenient on-site gift shop and Bay Boutique, which are open daily and sell sundries and luxury branded accessories by Heidi Klein and Love Bran swimwear.

Traveler Reviews

Our family of four had a fabulous vacation at Carlisle Bay! The room (#24) was spacious (bedroom areas, sitting area and bathroom), pretty, clean, and had a balcony with an amazing view of the beach and water. It exceeded our expectations. The staff and service were top notch. My girls (ages 16 and 17) both have severe food allergies (eggs, nuts and shellfish) and are very picky eaters. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate them at each restaurant and at every meal, and they all did it with a genuine smile. That made a difference and the food itself was great. The beach is the highlight of the resort. It’s private, gorgeous, expansive, quiet and peaceful. On top of that, there are plenty of beach chairs (which are super comfortable – stacked with a cushion, cover, and plush towel!) available for hotel guests. Over the years, we have stayed at many resorts in the Caribbean where it is a daily battle to get chairs at the beach and you are afraid to leave for a walk or meal because someone might take your chairs or they can be given away. That was not the case here. There were enough chairs for everyone and there was no morning stress about saving chairs. The hotel is also an easy 25 minute ride from the airport (the hotel is happy to arrange transport for you). Without hesitation, we would return to Carlisle Bay. It’s truly a luxury resort and is worth every cent. Thank you Carlisle Bay!

Honestly if I could give this place more than 5 stars I would! We went for 10 days and are a family of 4. The hotel is lovely, perfect size situated on a peaceful bay. Our children had a wonderful time at kids club and at one point we’re running to go in (typically they don’t do kids clubs). The hotel team in general were fantastic and could not do enough to make sure we had an amazing stay – we met so many people and thought they were all fantastic. In particular Brian the GM, Michael the Sommelier who was so knowledgeable about wine and we loved talking to, to the manager of the Jetty bar who organised a special meal for my birthday and the talented chef who cooked it. We stayed in a 2 bedroom beach front apartment. Antigua is not a large island and everywhere we visited outside the hotel felt like it was no more than a 30 minute drive. We hired a car and managed to see a bit of the island – highlights included the beautiful countryside, sting ray city and local restaurants. We didn’t manage to do Shirley Heights on a Sunday but will save this for next time. We can’t wait to return – a special place!
