Why we like it for families

  • The beach (and snorkeling!). Curacao is renowned for its vibrant marine life and this is a perfect spot for families with kids learning to snorkel. Curacao has a somewhat rockier coast than other Caribbean islands. But Avila offers calm, private, sandy beaches with easy entry into a shallow lagoon where everyone can get masks, snorkels and vests settled and adjusted – and where smaller waders can splash around. There are plenty of rocky crags along the sides of the beach where interesting fish can be found. A great place for new snorkelers. For the slightly more advanced and adventurous, a quick swim just past then lagoon into deeper water offers a reef and abundant things to see.
  • The spacious rooms. It can be hard to find suites with multiple bedrooms at an affordable rate. Avila shines for its value-for-money, with spacious 2-bedroom apartments with water views.
  • Convenient dining: Whether you want to enjoy the upscale scene at the Pen, great live music at Blues Caribbean Kitchen, or keep your toes in the sand at Schooner Bar, Avila covers it. Curacao has a great local food scene and no matter where you stay, you should venture out of your hotel for some of your meals. But for long days when you want to stick close to home base, the options Avila’s are all high quality. Both the Pen and Blues are consistently among the top-rated restaurants on the island, and they are right at your doorstep.
  • The Grounds: Though it has only 150 rooms, Avila has a sprawling property, with three wings and countless spots for kids to run around and explore. If they aren’t playing on one of the two beaches, they can flop into the hammocks by the pier, jump into the beachside pool, find a quiet spot in the hotel gardens (if quiet spots are their thing) or climb a lookout tower for sunset views. This also translates into great facilities for adults as well, including a beautiful fitness center with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the water and a palapa for outdoor massages.
  • The location: Avila is tucked neatly into the heart of Willemstad, Curacao’s colorful capital, though you will never know once you step inside. This makes it easy to take excursions into town – the murals in the Punda district and surrounding shops are worth at least an hour or two of wandering – and then retreat back to the beach and pool. The hotel also makes it as easy as possible for you and your kids to explore Curacao. Guests can take advantage of a twice-daily free shuttle service to Willemstad, and has a budget car rental right in the lobby if you want to explore further without renting a car for your whole trip.

Location and Activities

Avila Beach Hotel is less than 20 minutes from Curacao’s airport. You can rent a car at the airport–or arrange transportation through the hotel and rent a car through the Budget Rental Car location in Avila’s lobby for easy exploration.

Although we highly recommend exploring Curaçao’s beaches by rental car, Avila has two private beaches with great snorkeling right at your fingertips. Plus, you’re only a few minutes from the colors and culture of downtown Willemstad. For our best recommendations on what to do in Curacao, check out –

  • Curacao’s Avila Beach Hotel has remained one of the island’s best regarded beach hotels over six decades of operation. Just 15-minutes from Curaçao International Airport, and adjacent to the hip Pietermaai district of Curacao’s capital city of Willemstad, the hotel is tucked in among a variety of superb restaurants and bars. It’s also in easy reach of attractions including the Sea Aquarium Park and the colorful houses of the UNESCO-recognized Handelskade waterfront and pontoon bridge.
  • The hotel’s main draw is its two private and calm beaches with their very good snorkeling. In addition to snorkeling, the hotel’s lagoon offers water sports like paddle boarding and kayaking.
  • We love that the hotel’s rooms and other nooks and crannies showcase original artwork highlighting the island’s rich history. The 150 rooms are spread out in three buildings: The Octagon Wing, the Blues Wing and the Belle Alliance Wing. The Octagon Wing is the newest building and has standard rooms with a modern design—best for families who don’t mind sharing a space with their kids. Most of the larger apartments suitable for families (which range from 1 to 3 bedrooms) are in the Belle Alliance Wing, which has more of a colonial vibe. Avila recently added 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom beachfront rooms next to the Belle Alliance wing,
  • Every room has a mini-fridge, a coffee machine, and a flat-screen TV. The Belle Alliance family apartments include kitchens, an awesome perk with kids, but most have rainfall showerheads (with no bathtubs). The newer rooms in the Octagon Wing do have bathtubs, but less space to spread out.
  • Avila Hotel has two on-site restaurants, plus a bar offering drinks and finger foods throughout the day. The Pen Restaurant & Terrace has an outdoor dining space for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a terrace overlooking the ocean. At the end of a large pier out over the hotel’s lagoon is Blues Restaurant, which offers regional flavors alongside live music some nights. Just back from the sand is the Schooner bar, the oldest beach bar in Curacao. Quick coffees and smoothies are also on offer at the hotel’s Cafe Barista.
  • If you’re hoping for some much-deserved pampering during your stay, head to Cloud Nine Spa for a massage or other treatment.

Traveler Reviews

Our family stay (kids ages 13 and 10) at the Avila this past week was amazing. The setting is gorgeous and the view from the Belle Alliance apartments was fantastic. . . . The two lagoons and beaches on which the Avila are situated are PERFECT. You would think the snorkeling might be underwhelming at a hotel beach, but the opposite is true. The lagoons are rife with fish and beautiful underwater scenery, and they are calm and enclosed so the perfect place for kids to practice snorkeling before moving on to bigger beaches. We actually saw our favorite fish-sighting here — a group of flying gurnards. Beach chairs are ample and well maintained, with plenty of shade. The hotel breakfast buffet was also great, with many options and gluten free bread available for my daughter who has celiac disease. We would highly recommend the Avila for your stay in Curacao.

An incredible week at Avila I cannot think of a single bad thing to say about my stay at Avila. The staff was always so friendly and helpful, the food was amazing, the views were perfect and my room (the Blues wing right on the water) was the best hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. I highly recommend getting one of these rooms if you can. My sister’s wedding at the Blues bar was beautiful and everyone did such a great job getting that ready and accommodating us. I am so happy we stayed at Avila and I will be recommending not only Curacao to all of my friends, but your resort as well. Thank you so much for a perfect week!
