Why we like it for families

  • It’s the Complete Package: Martinhal Sagres delivers that rare combination that makes parents rejoice: sophisticated luxury designed specifically with kids in mind. The elegant, modern design satisfies adult cravings for a refined escape, while every detail is simultaneously crafted to make little ones feel welcome. From the spacious accommodations to the excellent dining options, from the beautiful pools to the attentive service, Martinhal doesn’t cut corners anywhere. It delivers everything we look for in a family resort and then adds thoughtful touches we didn’t even know we wanted.
  • It Gives You a Real Sense of Place: While much of the Algarve has become a tourist playground that could be anywhere in Europe, Martinhal Sagres immerses you in authentic Portugal. Here on the wilder Vincentina Coast, you’ll experience untouched beaches, dramatic natural beauty, and cool surf towns that haven’t been polished for mass tourism. The local catch of the day at the restaurants, Portuguese wines, and connections to local surf culture all remind you exactly where you are. When you’re sipping coffee while watching surfers tackle Atlantic waves against a backdrop of rugged Portuguese coastline, there’s no mistaking which country you’re visiting.
  • The Rooms (and Kitchens): Let’s be honest – hotel rooms with kids can be cramped and chaotic. Not here. Martinhal’s spacious apartments, houses, and villas give families room to breathe. The fully-equipped kitchens make mealtimes flexible, and the modern, clean design creates a calming vibe that still feels distinctly Portuguese. Ocean Houses with stunning views are perfect for families, while larger villas work brilliantly for multigenerational trips.
  • The Location: Martinhal Sagres is located where the wild Atlantic meets Portugal’s southwestern coast, creating ideal conditions for surfers. What makes the location truly special, though, is how it integrates with charming Sagres – you can walk along the beach into this authentic surf town. This means you’re not isolated in a resort bubble but connected to real Portuguese life. Plus, the drive from Lisbon takes you past remarkable beaches and through picturesque coastal towns, giving you a true taste of Portugal’s diverse landscapes before you even arrive.
  • It Caters to All Members of the Family: Martinhal offers that perfect balance where nothing feels sacrificed. The resort specializes in accommodating small children (the creche, or nursery, accepts babies from 6-23 months), but older kids are equally thrilled with exceptional surf lessons and tons of other activities. Every restaurant has not just a kids’ menu but an actual play area. At the M Bar family coffee shop, kids can play old-school Nintendo while parents enjoy a moment of peace. Despite all these family features, the resort never feels childish. Parents can actually relax here, not just supervise their kids in a different location.

Location and Activities

Martinhal Sagres is approximately 90 minutes from Faro Airport, an easy drive that gives you a taste of the Algarve coastline. If you’re starting your trip in Lisbon (which we totally recommend), a 3 hours drive south takes you along the scenic Atlantic Coast, with plenty of stops worth making for a photo or quick visit. When you finally arrive, you’ll find yourself on a beautiful beach that’s just a short walk from the historic town of Sagres.

Since you’ll be renting a car to travel from the airport, we definitely recommend venturing out. The resort makes an excellent base for exploring nearby Praia do Beliche, the surf haven of Arrifana, charming fishing villages, and good hiking trails. This region is home to some of the best seafood in Portugal, so you’ll want to sample local restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day in simple but delicious preparations.

  • When you first arrive at Martinhal Sagres, you might expect a sprawling resort that requires a map to navigate, but it actually feels surprisingly intimate. There are two main hubs: a beachfront area with restaurants, the hotel, and watersports (plus a super fun bike track the kids will love) and the Village Square with additional restaurants, a market, pool, salon, kids’ club, and awesome play area.
  • The hotel sits along the beach, while villas and houses are scattered throughout the property, giving every accommodation type its own unique vibe. Check out the resort map HERE.
  • While the hotel rooms offer stunning ocean views, unless you’re traveling with just an infant (or watching your budget), the houses and villas are the real stars of Martinhal. Spacious enough for families to spread out, with kitchens that make mealtimes a breeze, and designed so kids instantly feel at home. They’re kid-proofed and have everything you could need.
  • The décor strikes that perfect balance between luxury and comfort – minimalist enough to feel sophisticated yet still warm and inviting. We love how the design complements the surrounding landscape instead of competing with it.
  • Family mealtime stress? Not here! All four restaurants are exceptional, but what truly stands out is how brilliantly they handle kids. At Dunas, you can savor the catch of the day and Portuguese wines while watching your kids play on trampolines and play structures right in front of you. O Terraco offers those million-dollar ocean views, a killer breakfast buffet, and a kids’ corner that makes morning meals actually enjoyable. Craving something casual? Os Gambazinos serves up delicious pizza and pasta with an outdoor playground to keep the kids entertained while you wait. And the Josper grill is perfect for takeaway when everyone’s tired after a day of fun.
  • Don’t miss grabbing a coffee at M Bar – you can actually drink it while it’s still hot(!) as the kids are completely distracted by Nintendo games, gelato, and the indoor car.
  • If there’s one area where Martinhal truly shines, it’s the kids’ programming. Even your tiniest travelers (6-23 months) have a dedicated creche, while the Baby Concierge ensures you have everything from baby baths to bottle warmers. Older kids are grouped perfectly: Raposinhos for ages 2-4, Fox Club for 5-6 year olds, and Explorers Nature Club for 7+.
  • Beyond the clubs, there are sports academies, multiple play areas, water sports, putt-putt golf, and that awesome bike pump track we mentioned. But our number one piece of advice? Don’t miss the surf lessons! The location is ideal, and the instructors are amazing with children.
  • Need some pampering? The Finisterra Spa offers treatments for literally everyone: babies, kids, parents, and grandparents. Or, drop the kids at their clubs and treat yourselves to a couple’s massage – you deserve it!
  • Fitness enthusiasts will love the well-equipped gym, daily fitness classes, and personal training options. And for active family time, rent bikes for a family tour of the area or try windsurfing together – even if you spend more time falling in than riding waves, the laughs are worth it!

Traveler Reviews

Amazing holiday with young kids. Will 100% return! We had the most amazing stay! We stayed in an ocean view villa, which was well worth the extra money – the views were amazing and it was in a great location for everything on site.We stayed with our 8 month old and 2 and a half year old and the kids facility’s were the best Iv ever had from a hotel. The kids clubs, which we sent both kids to were fab. The staff were so nice I had to drag my 2 year old away when it come to the end. The pools are all heated and warm enough for kids to play and there are kids play areas in all of the restaurants as well as great kids food on the menu. The beach is beautiful and it’s a short walk to town if you wanted to go in.We used the spa as well which is free to use for guests which was a lovely treat and even ended up having a private yoga class. We left feeling so relaxed and will definitely return.

There is something for everyone here. 5 pools – all head, indoor and outdoor; tennis courts and lessons; archery; forest school; kids club; various playgrounds dotted everywhere including the beach – just a few of the delights here!
