Why we like it for families

  • The Flexibility. Octant Évora is all about making life easy for families. Got a picky eater? The staff is happy to whip up something special. The restaurant is always open – and so are the pools! If your early riser wants to dive into the pool at 5 AM and eat lunch at 10am, he can do it. And the family rooms with bunk beds are strategically placed near the pool so you won’t worry about disturbing kid-free travelers. Flexibility and intentionality are key to slow living, and the team at Octant Évora is thinking about the details.
  • The Food. There are several Octant hotels in Portugal, and each has a restaurant called A Terra: The Earth. The on-site hotel restaurant is all about celebrating local Alentejo flavors. This farm-to-table gem uses regional recipes, local suppliers, and fresh ingredients straight from the hotel’s own fruit trees, olive grove, and organic veggie garden. Taste the real Alentejo with kids through these culinary experiences.
  • The Rooms (and Kitchens). Octant Evora’s rooms are split into two sections: hotel rooms and villas, each offering fun perks for families. Hotel rooms with bunk beds have patios that walk right out to the pool so the kids can splash around while you actually get a chance to relax. The private plunge pool villas face the countryside and offer more privacy, room to spread out, and kitchens perfect for whipping up meals with local ingredients.
  • The Location. Just two hours from Lisbon in Portugal’s Alentejo region, this hotel is easy to access yet feels miles away from the city. Alentejo is the place to lean into the slower pace of countryside life. But don’t worry – slow travel still includes activities for the kids, with Octant Evora offering picnics, farm animal visits, hikes, and a fantastic kids’ club. Plus, you’ll get all the classic European vacation vibes – fresh food, wine, charming villages, and rolling hills. It’s a real breath of fresh air.
  • The Pool(s). There are three pools to enjoy when you stay at Octant Evora with kids: two centrally-located outdoor pools are open 24/7 and the heated indoor pool at the spa has family hours. When it’s time for a break, there are also three adults-only pools. Drop the kids off at the kids’ club – yes they have one! – and RUN to one of those. The view is straight out of a painting – you won’t want to miss it.
  • The Value. There are other higher-end hotels in the Alentejo region for true luxury family travelers – hundred year old estates where you can feel the region’s history. Octant Evora is not that hotel: It offers a more modern luxury where you can have immersive experiences with your kids in Alentejo at a more wallet-friendly price point. It may not be a working olive mill, but it has loads of character, a connection to the region, and plenty of space to reconnect with nature at this family-friendly hotel in Portugal.

Location and Activities

Octant Évora is just two hours from Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS). Nestled on 11 hectares of Alentejo’s peaceful plains, it is a perfect and intentional escape from the city’s hustle.

We suggest renting a car at the airport – it’s an easy drive and gives you the freedom to explore local wineries, hillside villages, and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Evora, just 20 minutes away. But don’t overschedule your days in the countryside: There’s plenty to enjoy on-site at Octant Evora with kids, from the scenic Monte Novo Dam to wine tastings and even hot air balloon rides.

  • After your drive from Lisbon, everyone will be ready to sink into the tranquility of the Octant Évora and enjoy the property. The estate is huge, with sprawling green landscapes and beautifully kept gardens. On one side, you’ve got the main hotel, and on the other, the villas. The pools are right in the middle.
  • Throughout the property, there are plenty of spots to relax and unwind, from the nearby river lake to the giant sofas for watching the sunset and stargazing.
  • If you don’t mind sharing a sleeping space with your kids, book yourself the bunk bed terrace room. Your little ones will be thrilled by the bunks, and your older kids will love how the terrace leads straight to the pool – perfect for quick dips. This is a delight for you too, because you can hang on your terrace while older kids swim nearby.
  • For more privacy and space, the private pool villas are ideal, offering two or three bedrooms. You’ll love lounging by your pool, soaking in those incredible countryside views, and feeling like you’ve got the whole place to yourselves.
  • Octant Évora’s decor is chic and modern, with a focus on natural materials and a calming color palette. The clean lines and minimalist furnishings are bathed in natural light, keeping the spotlight on the beauty of the Alentejo region.
  • Dining at Octant Évora is all about enjoying the authentic flavors of the area. At A Terra, you’ll find dishes that are fresh, seasonal, and full of Portuguese goodness with a modern twist. Start your day with a complimentary breakfast featuring fresh-from-the-oven pastries, creamy local cheeses, and seasonal fruits – many of which come straight from the hotel’s own garden.
  • The food here reflects the minimalist vibe, with simple, Alentejo-region flavors that let the ingredients shine. But don’t worry about finding something for your kids; there’s also a separate pizza menu loaded with fresh, tasty, locally sourced toppings.
  • Octant Évora is all about creating the perfect spot to spend quality time with your loved ones. They’ve got some really awesome experiences for visitors of all ages, whether it’s soaring in hot air balloons, learning pottery from local masters, or exploring the Gato Mill ruins on horseback, just to name a few.
  • For children who love a bit of independence, the kids’ club is a dream. Children aged 3-12 can dive into nature-themed yoga, go on treasure hunts, or even help feed the farm animals.
  • While the kids are distracted, treat yourself to a spa day or a wine tasting. But you can enjoy those things even if you’re not a kids’ club family: The spa has a special menu for little explorers, and the Mainova Kids Experience lets them sample fruit nectars and olive oils while you enjoy your wine tasting. How cool is that?

Five Star ExperienceThis hotel is amazing! The rooms are spacious and very clean, the restaurant is great, there is an indoor pool, a sauna and a gym and the outside areas are also great. You don’t need to leave the premises. What makes this a five star rating: twice a day the rooms are provided with water. At the end of the day they will bring biscuits by, the restaurant is open all day (great when traveling with kids) – also for room- and pool-service. There are many activities for kids and they provide the cutest little presents for babies by arrival. They just have much attention for detail and really make an effort to make your stay pleasant!Make sure you don’t mind kids, since there are many of them 😉
