Why we like it for families

  • The location: Roatan is known for its snorkeling and diving—and the best spot to snorkel from shore is right in front of the Kimpton Grand Roatán. Just a five-minute swim through shallow water brings you to an incredible drop-off, Finding Nemo style, where colorful fish thrive. It’s the kind of underwater scenery you’d normally have to scuba dive to see. And because it’s right there, you can snorkel early in the morning or at sunset—no to battle mid-day crowds. West Bay Beach itself is also a fantastic location for families who want a lively vibe.
  • The Pool: The beachfront pool cneed hecks all the boxes for families. It has ledges, built-in seats, shallow areas, and a swim-up bar, making it perfect for kids (and parents) of all ages. If you like a great pool scene with ocean views, this is a hotel for you.
  • The Rooms: The condo-style villa suites at the Kimpton are awesome for families, with separate living areas and full kitchens to make family travel so much easier. Having room to spread out – and a place to store snacks – just makes a trip run smoother. Choose a one or two bedroom family suite with an ocean view.
  • The Food: The beachfront restaurant at the Kimpton Grand Roatan is exactly what you want on a trip with kids—great food, a wood-fired pizza oven, and tables in the sand where kids can come and go as they please. While the resort has solid dining options, Roatán’s food scene is worth exploring. Luckily, some of the island’s best casual restaurants are just a short stroll down the beach, and the more upscale dining is just a water taxi ride away, making it easy to mix things up.

Location and Activities

Kimpton Grand Roatán sits right on West Bay Beach and claims the island’s best spot for snorkeling. It’s just a 20-minute drive from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB).

While the Kimpton has an amazing beachfront pool and fantastic off-shore snorkeling, we can’t emphasize enough that Roatán is worth exploring. Great restaurants, beach bars, and family-friendly attractions—like the Roatán Chocolate Factory, ziplining courses, and the Maya Eden Eco Park —are just a short drive away, making this an ideal home base for all the kid-friendly experiences Roatán has to offer.

A shuttle service and local water taxis are available to take you into West End Village—but if you want to see more of the island, your best bet is to rent a car or arrange for guided excursions in advance.

  • Roatan is a long skinny island with a jungle ridge that runs along its spine. The drive to Kimpton Grand Roatán highlights just how green the island is, before opening up to unreal ocean views—a preview of what’s to come. The resort is designed so that almost every room has an ocean view or easy beach access. The main tower houses modern rooms with sweeping sea views, while the beachfront suites and condos sit closer to the sand, giving families plenty of space to spread out.
  • Roatan is a very casual island–but the Kimpton Grand Roatan is an upscale resort with lovely design. Fully renovated in 2023, it feels new, with the Kimpton classic charms like daily happy hour.
  • Everything here is built around the beach. The pool, beachfront restaurant, and bar all face the water, so you’re never far from the island’s impossibly blue sea. Whether you book a room in the tower or a condo with extra space, you’ll wake up to ocean breezes and spend your days flipping between the beach and pool. Get a feel for the resort layout here. One important thing to note: West Bay Beach is not a “calm, quiet, get away from it all” kind of beach. It’s energetic – lined with casual bars and restaurants and dive hotels, and on some days, cruise ship passengers. Come here for a fun and upbeat vacation in a gorgeous setting — not seclusion.
  • We don’t usually recommend double queen rooms for families, but we’ve tried them out at the Kimpton Grand Roatán and they work. The balcony views are incredible, with great lounge furniture, so parents can soak in the scenery while the kids sleep inside. That little extra space makes all the difference. Still, for families who want more room to spread out, the one- and two-bedroom villa-style suites are the best pick. They come with separate living areas and kitchenettes, making them a great choice for longer stays.
  • Oceanview rooms are the way to go at this resort. The beachfront suites sound tempting, but they don’t actually offer direct beach access—so there’s no great advantage to justify the extra cost in our opinion.
  • As for dining, Sea Cat is the ultimate beachfront dining spot—wood-fired pizza, tacos, and fresh seafood, all served with your feet in the sand. There’s something for everyone, and when the kids finish eating, they can run right back to the pool.
  • The resort’s other dining options let you mix it up. Alera serves locally- sourced, upscale dinners, while the beach bar keeps the drinks flowing all day. There’s even a coffee shop that turns into a cocktail bar at night. One thing to flag: Breakfast here is expensive. Make sure you book through Mango Tree to get breakfast included because for a family of 4, it can run you $100+ per day.
  • There is no kids’ club at the Kimpton—the resort is more about making your own fun together, but they can help you arrange babysitting (or we can, if you plan your trip with us). Spend the day exploring Roatán—snorkeling tours, boat trips, and wildlife encounters are all easy to arrange—then come back to the pool and beach when things quiet down. While there’s no structured kids’ programming, you’ll find family-friendly activities pop up throughout your stay, especially during holiday weeks—just check in with the concierge when you arrive.
  • The brand-new spa is a destination in itself—so good it’s been voted one of the best in the world. Set in its own building, it’s the kind of place you could (and should) spend a half day. There are hot and cold plunge pools, incredible treatments, and even food service so you can fully unwind.
  • For those who like to exercise on vacation, start with a snorkel, and then take advantage of the 24/7 fitness center.

Amazing family stay What a great stay in the hotel. The property has been newly remodeled with great taste and the scenery is astonishing. Could not enjoy more the views at the beach in different moments of the day, to the sunset summit. Food is great and the variety of restaurants offer great options we could complement with other options in West Bay. Snorkeling with the kids is a must. It is a real wonder to have the coral reef so close to shore!!! The staff is very friendly and you can feel the excitement for them to be working for the best hotel in the island. Luxury, scenery, food and service. My favorite in Roatan

Wonderful Family Vacation This resort / hotel is absolutely wonderful. The facilities, restaurants, pool, and bungalow gust room are all top notch. I greatly appreciated the wonderful staff and the extras they provide that you don’t see often. From the welcome drink at checkin, to the complimentary happy hour, poolside towel service and snack, they were all wonderful touches. My family and I were well treated by pool attendant August and server Tayri Miguel Favio at Sea Cat bar/restaurant. We started everyday with breakfast at Alera restaurant with personalized service from Jeidsi Valdez. My 3 year old daughter had a great time. Ground transportation from the airport was arranged seamlessly with concierge Lea Raymond. We will definitely be returning for another stay.
