Why we like it for families

  • The Family Rooms. Hotel Capellan de Getsemani has a two-bedroom suite on the second floor dubbed the “family suite,” making it clear that children are welcome. The rest of the hotel’s rooms are junior suites (good for families with one young child). If you’re a family of 4+ and can grab the family room for your stay in Cartagena, we highly recommend it.
  • The Rooftop Pool & Bar. You may be in the heart of a colonial city, but Cappellan de Getsemani’s rooftop feel emits a tropical vibe, complete with palm trees and epic sunset. A great place to spend the early evening hours while winding your kids down after a long day. The rooftop pool is small, but has a shallow platform for kids. There’s plenty of comfortable terrace seating.
  • The Location. This unique hotel is just outside Cartagena’s walled city, in a colorful, up-and-coming, hip neighborhood called Getsemani. If you would rather stay in Williamsburg, New York than Manhattan, you would find yourself at home in Getsemani. You’ll be surrounded by art, street food, bistros and nightlife – and be just a short walk from the more refined walled city. The whole family can enjoy a unique, urban side of Cartagena.
  • The Food. Guests rave about the food and the hotel restaurant, Clero, which is a Caribbean/Colombian blend. We love when a hotel restaurant offers exquisite local cuisine, so parents don’t feel they’re missing out dining at the hotel. Bonus: The restaurant opens at 6:30am for breakfast, for those with early rising little ones, and has a kids menu.
  • The Extras. It’s all in the details. The staff at Cappellan de Getsemani go out of their way to add little touches to maximize your enjoyment. In summer, for example, they offer water popsicles and fresh fruit in the afternoon, and coffee tastings in the evening.

Location and Activities

  • Getting to Hotel Capellan de Getsemani from the Rafael Nuñez International Airport takes 14 minutes by car. It is conveniently located in the vibrant Getsemi neighborhood, just a short stroll from The Walled City, the Historical Center, and the Clock Tower.
  • Arriving at reception, you can immediately feel the Spanish colonial vibe from the sophisticated furniture designs. The internal courtyard, with light wood floors, brick archways, and extensive greenery, creates a calm environment. There are sitting areas all throughout the hotel, from the courtyard to the rooftop, providing lots of places to relax with the kids.
  • Inside the hotel are 30 rooms and suites with eclectic decor. Warm tones of each subtly maintain the colonial style, with French touches adding a sense of luxury and refinement. Depending on which room you book, the window or terrace offers the view of either the lively neighborhood or the internal courtyard.
  • Hotel Capellan has three small swimming pools, 2 on the first floor and one on the roofdeck. All pools have sun loungers. The swimming pool on the rooftop is really the centerpiece of the hotel: Soak up the sun rays while enjoying a drink from pool bar and an epic sunset view of Cartagena. The shaded hammocks on the roof are an excellent touch.
  • There also are two restaurants and a terrace bar on site. The main restaurant, Clero, is the place to go if you want to get a taste of Colombian dishes with Caribbean flavors. Guests rave about the included breakfast—which families will be delighted to hear starts as early as 6:30am. Clero serves lunch and dinner as well, though families will probably enjoy lunch at the Abadesa Terrace Bar near the pool on the roof. The hotel has a kids’ menu and high-chairs, making dining a stress-free experience for families traveling with children.

Traveler Reviews

I enjoyed my time at this hotel. It is clean and the staff were wonderful. I did not want to leave. I also liked that it was walking distance from the tourist areas. We were able to walk around the city and see some of what Colombia had to offer. The food at the hotel was also amazing.

Family spent Easter week in Cartagena at Capellan Hotel. Beautiful and peaceful place at Getsemani neighborhood. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool and the attention the hotel people paid to them. Room was very comfortable and food amazing. Very convenient place nearby restaurants, plazas, discos, churches, museums, etc. Placed walking distance to most of the hotspots of old Cartagena. We will come back.
