Why we like it for families

  • THE BEACH. One look at Cape Santa Maria’s luxurious white-sand beach, and you’ll immediately forget that this resort doesn’t have a pool. Calm doesn’t even begin to describe the blissful vibe of this beach, making it the perfect place for little ones to get comfortable in the crystal blue water. The secluded beach is also large enough (and the hotel small enough) that there’s never a crowd, allowing your family to chill out under the sun without having to fight for a prime spot. The hotel offers plenty of kids’ toys on the beach.
  • THE VILLAS. The two-bedroom beachfront villas at Cape Santa Maria are the quintessential paradise locales for families with young children. Not only are you steps from the ocean, and one of the most stunning beaches in the Bahamas, but you also get all the comforts of home: Ample space for families of four and up, a fully equipped kitchen, TV, complimentary wifi, washer/dryer, and even the option of grocery delivery should you wish to prepare your own meals.
  • A CHANCE TO UNPLUG. If it’s a screen-time break you’re looking for, skip the villas, and go for the bungalows. These simpler – but still spacious – accommodations have one- or two-bedrooms, but do not have TV or wifi. Kids can experience the odd movie night on the TV in the resort’s lobby, but your room will be a place for unplugging with books or board games.
  • THE FISH. While the menu can be somewhat limited at Cape Santa Maria, it’s great for fish lovers. The fried local fish dishes are excellent, as are the happy hour specials (that often include conch). The restaurant has a great kids’ menu for lunch and dinner and is flexible with substitutions and requests. If you fancy a deep sea fishing excursion, the chef will prepare your catch that night for dinner.

Location and Activities

Cape Sante Maria is on Long Island in the Bahamas.

To get to Long Island, you’ll Fly to Nassau, and then take a hopper flight to Long Island’s Stella Maris Airport (SML) on Southern Air Charters. From there, you’re just a 20-minute taxi ride from the resort.

An alternative option is to fly from Nassau to Long Island’s Deadman’s Cay Airport (LLI) on BahamasAir, which will require a one-hour taxi transfer to Cape Santa Maria.

The ride to Cape Santa Maria can be a great opportunity to scout out sightseeing options for your getaway, like the nearby community of Stella Maris, where you can find the island’s marina, restaurants, and taverns. Dean’s Blue Hole, the second-deepest blue hole in the world, is also a must-see for visitors to Long Island.

  • Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort epitomizes the vibe of the Bahamas Out Islands: seclusion, natural beauty, peace and quiet, and stunning blue water. The turquoise color and the long stretch of fine, powdery sand is straight out of a postcard. Come here for a simple stay on a beautiful beach.
  • The beach at Cape Santa Maria features lounge chairs, hammocks, and a few small cabanas where guests can soak up the sunshine. And if we’re talking about kicking up the beach fun, the resort also offers a variety of water sports and activities including kayaking, fishing, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
  • The calm waters of the Caribbean Sea are perfect for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike. The resort provides all the necessary equipment, including masks, fins, and snorkels. If scuba diving is more your speed, there’s a PADI master diving on-site, and certified divers can head to several dive sites within a 15-25 minute boat ride. You’re likely to see a stingray or two.
  • Steps from the beach, you’ll stay in either a one- or two-bedroom bungalow, or a two-bedroom villa. The interiors exude a chic but casual island aesthetic, with pastel walls and simple rattan furniture. The private patios or balconies offer stunning views of the ocean.
  • The Beach House restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There’s a focus on fresh fish, with fried conch making the daily happy hour menu. The kids menu is great, and the chefs are open to substitutions and requests. Be aware, if you don’t eat fish, the menu can feel limited after a few days. Villa guests can pre-order groceries and mix things up with their own cooking.

Fantastic Beach Getaway for the Entire Family We brought our entire family (adult children and grandchild) from around the US for a week in paradise. We had three bungalows in a row (a king and two 2 Bedroom bungalows.) After a spending a night in Nassau in transit, we felt that Long Island and CSM was the real Bahamas. Highly recommend for all ages.
